Can Hot Tub Covers Melt?

It might seem surprising, but yes, hot tub covers can melt, and it is a relatively common issue. While the outer vinyl skin is durable, the foam core inside is made of Expanded Polystyrene (EPS), which is highly sensitive to concentrated heat.

Here is why it happens and how you can prevent it.

1. The "Magnifying Glass" Effect (Low-E Windows)

The most common cause of a melted cover isn't the sun itself, but reflected sunlight. Modern energy-efficient windows (Low-E glass) are designed to reflect heat away from a house.

• The Hazard: If the window is slightly concave, it can act like a magnifying glass, focusing a beam of light onto your hot tub.

• The Damage: This reflected beam can reach temperatures over 200°F (93°C), which is more than enough to melt the vinyl skin and the foam core underneath. You will often see a distinct "melt line" or a warped dip in the cover.

2. Objects Left on the Cover

Placing items on top of your hot tub cover can create localized "hot spots."

• Plastic Containers: A clear plastic bin or a bottle of water can focus sunlight onto the cover's surface.

• Wet Towels or Inflatables: Items like pool noodles, inflatable toys, or even wet towels trap heat underneath them. Because the heat cannot dissipate, it builds up until the foam begins to compress or melt.

3. Chemical "Melting" (Gassing Out)

While not "melting" in the thermal sense, high concentrations of chemicals can chemically dissolve the underside of the cover.

• The Cause: When you "shock" your hot tub with high levels of chlorine or bromine and immediately close the cover, corrosive gases get trapped.

• The Damage: These gases eat away at the plastic vapor barrier and can cause the foam to become brittle, sag, or appear to "shrink" and dissolve over time.

How to Prevent Melting

To keep your cover in good shape, consider these simple habits:

• Check Reflections: Notice where the sun reflects off your windows during the hottest part of the day. If a beam hits your spa, you may need to install a window screen or a small awning.

• Clear the Top: Never use your hot tub cover as a storage shelf for toys, towels, or cleaning supplies.

• Let it Breathe: After adding chemicals or shocking the water, leave the cover fully open for at least 30–60 minutes to allow the corrosive gases to escape.

• Use a Cover Cap: A reflective "cover cap" (a thin, protective sheet) can provide an extra layer of UV and heat protection.
