Can Hot Tub Covers Melt? Here’s What You Need to Know

Himesh Sharma @ 2025-10-03 00:11:37 -0700

If you own a hot tub, you might wonder can a spa cover actually melt? The answer is yes, under certain circumstances, but understanding why and how this happens can help you protect your investment.

What Our Spa Covers Are Made Of

Our spa cover foam cores are crafted from expanded polystyrene (EPS), a tough and rigid closed-cell foam that provides both durability and water resistance, slowing water absorption to keep your cover in top condition for years. The foam density not only impacts insulation, helping the cover retain heat, but also determines its strength, allowing it to hold more weight like water or snow without cracking.

While EPS is durable, it is not invincible. Heat accumulation is the main cause of melting: when items are left on the cover, sunlight heats them, and the trapped warmth can soften or even melt the foam. Certain objects are known to cause damage, including inflatable pool toys or rafts, wet towels left to dry, clothing placed on the cover, and sunlight reflected from nearby windows acting like a magnifying glass.

To protect your spa cover, avoid leaving items on it, be cautious of reflective surfaces that could focus sunlight, and regularly inspect the cover for any signs of heat damage.

Because melted foam is caused by items left on the cover something outside the manufacturer’s control our warranty does not cover melted foam cores. Taking simple precautions can extend the life of your spa cover and save you from unexpected damage.
